Game of Thrones 2x06: Return of the Stupid

Serious spoilers for ep 2x06 of Game of Thrones behind the cut. No spoilers for 2x07, which I haven't seen yet.

Also, strong opinions. Funny that. ;-)

Wow, some people have recently been hit with a double thwap of the stupid stick, haven't they.

Dear Jon Snow:
There is not enough headdesk in the world. Unless you find a brain sooner rather than later, I will begin to think everyone else in the Night's Watch is stupid, too, simply because they're not killing you as a preventative measure. (Honestly, they leave you alone with the girl that you will obviously not be able to kill, despite your idiotic - and not incidentally lethally dangerous - volunteering? Have these people met you? I mean, if they hadn't met you, I'd have guessed they wanted to give you some privacy to rape her before killing her, or something. But as it is, I suppose I'll have to go with the theory of your stupid being catching.)

The way you're going, dear Jon, you'll get everyone else killed through gross stupidity. No doubt while you yourself survive out of narrative necessity, because clearly, your story is not over yet.

Jon Snow is beginning to remind me of one of my most-hated characters of all times. He'd better do something marginally intelligent soon, or I fear it will all be over between us.

Dear Arya Stark:
I make allowances for you because you're a child in a horrible situation, you're keeping your head amazingly well, and you're under incredible stress. But getting caught in a suspicious head-long flight with the incriminating stolen letter clutched conspicuously in your sweaty little fist? Girl, that was so unnecessary. And immediately after you showed nerves of steel in an incredibly risky situation, too. Still, nice save. Way more luck than brains involved in that one, though. Do better next time, okay?

Dear Danaerys Stormborn Targaryen:
You can't honestly be surprised that someone stole your dragons. I'm astounded that you kept them this long, and that you yourself are still alive. Except, of course, that you can't be killed because your plot-line is clearly far from over.

I like Danaerys a lot, but she was not at her best in this ep; her speech to the merchant on the stairs had me cringing with second-hand embarrassment. She seems to be reverting to 'naïve spoiled princess waiting for everything to be arranged for her' in an environment that allows her to think of herself in this light. She evidently has a lot of learning and growing up yet to do. Which I hope will be a lot of fun to watch. Of course, she may also just be at her best in adversity, in which case the theft of the dragons should help her get her edge back.

Also, how many Dothraki does she have left, anyway? I keep thinking they have to have run out, but there always seems to be one more handful. There must be an inexhaustible Dothraki cornucopia out there somewhere that keeps filling them up to the legally required minimum of 18, whenever some more die a bloody death.

Dear Bran Stark:
Not a bad showing. You're still not actually interesting, but acting intelligently goes such a long way. It helped that there was actually something happening around you for once. It also helped that you refrained from boring me with further portentous prophetic dreams, even if you couldn't help but constantly allude to them.

The old steward was also cool. I forget his name, but very good work there.

Dear Theon Greyjoy:
You are still stupid. You are still not interesting. You'd better hope new plot developments arise for you soon, or I fear you're heading for that bad place where your narrative role is played out. Bad for you, that is, not for me. I just hope it means we see more of your infinitely smarter, more dangerous and more interesting sister.

The conflict of loyalties and the psychological consequences of child hostage situations of this kind are actually fascinating subjects, IMO. Theon, though, has so far not succeeded in getting me interested at all. Somehow, his various traumata, complexes and conflicts all come out so exceedingly mundane and petty. Too bad.

Dear Tyrion Lancaster Lannister:
That you managed to send Myrcella off to be married against Cersei's wishes shows that you have gathered a lot more power at court than I'd thought. Also rather more than the show *showed* you gathering, but hey. Keep up the good work! Also, you hitting the snivelling baby tyrant never gets old.

I haven't seen last Sunday's ep (or read the books) yet, so please, no spoilers in the comments!
