Close Encounters with the Blue Screen of Death

Two weeks ago, my computer died on me - and due to a series of what basically amounts to the pc equivalents of amusing pratfalls and pies in the face (or rather the mainboard), it's taken me until now to get a new system up and running. Before you ask, no, I hadn't made a proper safety copy of all my data. I have always been obsessive about backing everything up... except for the last couple of months, when I relaxed because I had a brand-new harddrive and too much trust in the universe. (Yeah, you can already hear the audience beginning to chortle as the pie is raised.)

To summarize: Argh.

Still, subtract the stress of suddenly being thrust into a pc-less world and the damage isn't that bad. I have the latest versions of my most important files, by which I mean my various writing endeavors. :-) The rest, I can beg, borrow and/or steal, as appropriate. (Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] solo___ and [livejournal.com profile] k_julia, for letting me. *g*)

But. Uhm. There's this new thing. I hesitate to call it a fandom just yet, especially since I have of course managed to slide into it ass-backwards and wrong way up and then compounded the problem by insisting on not actually being interested in any of the main pairings that anyone *else* in the world is interested in. Noooo, of course I had to go and find myself a corner of the new playground in which I am absolutely alone. And then collect a huge bunch of pics and info and videos in a very short time and start writing a story at breakneck speeds - and then have the data go poof and the story stall for lack of a real computer to write it on.

Argh, squared.

Vague enough yet? *g* Yeah, you'll hear more about this new thing (TM) soon, when I have gathered the resolve to out myself. Just let me whine a bit first. ;-)

Anyway! If anything interesting / exciting / wonderful happened in the last two weeks that you think I should know about, please let me know!

Also, just how subsceptible are you guys to pimpage...?

Why I ask? Oh... no particular reason. *whistles*

Well, since I'm now watching Eureka and the marvellous Middleman, I think I might be highly susceptible to pimpage...

Glad to hear your computer is back - we just went through the same thing here, but we have a stupid number of computers (6, including outdated ones, for 2 people) that we just won't get rid of, so at least we had some backup!

Well, since I'm now watching Eureka and the marvellous Middleman, I think I might be highly susceptible to pimpage...

That's very encouraging, although I'm afraid this thing I'm beating around the bush about is not nearly so respectable. :-) But we'll see...

*evil cackle*

The snowball scheme of corruption... :-)

YAY for having your computer back! I have to admire you for not killing people, really. Well done. *g* And now there can be more writing!

Pyramid scheme! Do I get a bonus for every new fan you two lure into this thing?

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, as I was just telling Julia, I really doubt that anyone will follow me into this particular insanity. But if someone actually should, I'll buy you a beer. :-)

I'm pretty sure there must have been special circumstances of some kind in my case, because otherwise, I have no explanation. *g*

I remember when I didn't think anybody would follow me into this particular insanity...

In the extremely unlikely event that someone actually did, I'm sure they'd just gravitate to the majority pairing(s) like everyone else. *headdesk*

Alignment of stars. I don't know how it happened either. (Except for the otters.)

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
What is it with those otters, anyway?

[identity profile] k-julia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I can tell you about the otters sometime, but this is so public... *g*

The snowball scheme of corruption...

Here's hoping, though to tell you the truth I have very very little faith in my ability to convince anyone to join us (me?) in this particular handbasket. :-)

And yeah, go me for not killing anyone. *g* Though in the end I did begin to wonder which god would accept a sacrifice in order to end this cruel punishment, and whether a chicken would suffice...

Much icon love, btw. :-)

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
But chickens are easier to carry to the scene of the computer woes.

If I say 'otters', ima get keeled...

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
... otters?

They are probably easier to carry than goats, but I'm sure I'm missing something here. *g*

[identity profile] k-julia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
YES YOU ARE! (Now I wish I had a scary!Kame icon. YOU WOULD BE SO SCARED.)

[identity profile] m-kir.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
... if this is the thing you've mentioned to me over AIM, then *no*. But you knew this, yes?

(condolences on the computer)

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I did. *g* I'm sure you'll be in very good company... particularly since I myself don't even know how this happened. *headdesk*

Yeah, the computer thing was very trying. By the end, I was wondering if I should maybe be sacrificing something (someone?) to an appropriate deity...

[identity profile] m-kir.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
so many other nice fandoms you could be into... *looks at you with sad eyes*

(considers pimping *you* into WoW)

ext_3245: (Default)

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always open to suggestions! :-)

Not into computer games though, so WoW seems a lost cause...

[identity profile] m-kir.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
there's quite a nice bit of lore behind the game, tho... I've always thought that there should be more fanfiction for WoW...

lalala...
ext_3245: (Default)

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in that case you should write it. :-)

There seems to be a lot of lore behind most adventure games these days. I suspect that it's only interesting if you actually play them. *g*

[identity profile] ellensmithee.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Woo for the new fandom! (I'm almost afraid to ask what it is... ;-))

And I can totally emphasize about the comp. I dumped water into my laptop and killed it earlier this week.

Woo for the new fandom! (I'm almost afraid to ask what it is... ;-))

And with good reason. :-) I don't even really know how to go about trying to pimp this. Sorry for being so vague, I'm just not ready to come out about this yet. *g*

Will think on the matter, assemble pimping DVD and suddenly drop by your house when you are alone and defenceless. *evil cackle*

And on the laptop woes, wahh... who has angered the computer gods of the Rhineland??

[identity profile] ellensmithee.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know! I've been expecting my work comp to conk out soon since it's three years old and I was ready to buy a new one, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to buy a laptop and a PC by the end of the year.

Now I'm really curious about your new fandom. And pimp away. ;))

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't know what this is - my DVD recorder/player has also been very sickly these past few days. :-/ Is it an epidemic, maybe?

Yeah. Will get back to you on the fandom thing. Once I get over myself, and maybe have some fiction as a pimping aid. *g*

If it's bandom I'll laugh and laugh and laugh.
And then I will pester you about writing for it. *g*
ext_3245: (Default)

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
Not... exactly?

I'm not sure who all qualifies for bandom, but I suspect these guys are too Japanese for it. :-)

[personal profile] fleurrochard 2008-08-21 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well - that has been a wank a few months ago - there were people that said that bandom should apply to all bands, and they were people that said, eh, if you want to use it for that, ok, but we'll continue our usage (i.e. mostly bands that have some connection to Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy.)

It wasn't exactly pleasant.

It has died down now, and on LJ bandom continues to mostly apply to bands with a connection to Pete Wentz.

So - it depends! Has this band a connection to Pete Wentz? (Or to another band/person who has such a connection?) Have they ever played at a festival one of these bands has played at as well? Then they might fall under the name of bandom. *g*
ext_3245: (Default)

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
So Pete Wentz is the foundation of bandom, huh? *g* I've heard the name bandied about on my friendslist, but I couldn't pick him out of a line-up...

Has this band a connection to Pete Wentz? (Or to another band/person who has such a connection?)

I can say with absolute certainty that this is not the case, except in the sense that they all make music and are all human. *g* So definitely not bandom, then.

Too bad, in a way, because if it were bandom then I would not feel so alone. *sob*
ext_167: (Default)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/solo____/ 2008-08-21 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
...are all human.

Such confidence...

...would not feel so alone.

I think [livejournal.com profile] k_julia and I should go sulk now...

PS who is this Wentz guy?
ext_3245: (Default)

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Such confidence...

Unless, of course, you count Maru's sweater vest, which gets as much stage time as the other band members, but doesn't sing. That's why I didn't think it should count.

I think k_julia and I should go sulk now...

You're both being very supportive and enabling, which I appreciate muchly! It's just that... ack. I feel somewhat alone in my corner of self-created OTP-ness. *g*

(And I just had to stop myself from making a bad pun. I hope you see the full horror of this.)

Pete Wentz is the BNF of bandom.
No, really.
No, really.

Unfortunatley I don't have an icon with him on it, but have a Patrick icon! (Patrick Stump is the lead singer of Fall Out Boy, Pete's best friend and the one Pete is most often slashed with. Sometimes even by Pete! *g*)

Too bad, in a way, because if it were bandom then I would not feel so alone. *sob*

Awww.
Who is this band then? *curious*
ext_3245: (Default)

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Pete Wentz is the BNF of bandom.

No, really? *g*

Who is this band then? *curious*

It's... complicated. In part because it's not really the *band*. It's more one guy who happens to be in a band. And then there's this other guy who happens to be in a different band. And...

They're not often slashed with each other - and for "not often", read "not at all". Except once, in a TV show. And in my story. Which probably nobody will want to read anyway, because I am basically inventing this pairing. Unless you count that show, where they were very sweet as a loving couple cuddling on a beach. *g*

Anyway, complicated. I'll get back to you on this, I promise. I just need some more time. :-)

I could possibly send you some pics though...

I have nothing against pictures. :)
(Though stories are usually more effective to pimp me into a fandom. Just saying.)
ext_3245: (Default)

[identity profile] rheasilvia.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, will assemble something... it may take me a bit though. I am still very hesitant about this entire thing, as you may have noticed. ;-)

And - there is a story coming up. Yes. But it's not short, and so not yet ready for public consumption. *g*
