I don't know whether you're in the minority when it comes to liking both the series and the novel - I know there are several other fans in the SID comm who enjoy both, and I've been assuming there are quite a lot more out in the wild! But you are the first fan I've heard from who has felt that the characterizations were not intrinsically different. Interesting!
