An amnesiac detective in Wuxialand attempts to find out what happened at a devastating battle eight years ago; he woke up on the battlefield with no memory of the events, and has been trying to find closure ever since. Along the way, he solves a series of murder mysteries, meets and befriends a diverse cast of characters, and falls in love with a beautiful ex-assassin.

This series is basically a series of locked-room murder mysteries, linked together by the overarching plot of the main character’s search for his past. There are a number of interesting characters, but they take a very long time to develop – almost the entire series in some cases. The same is true of the plot, which only really gets going in the last ep. This is when many characters (including the lead!) become truly interesting for the first time, various relationships come alive, and riveting plot potential for an entire series materializes… with absolutely no time left to do anything with any of this.

The last ep showed me a drama that I might have *loved* to see. This series could have been that drama, if they’d condensed the first 23 eps down to maybe 8, then had now-ep 24, and then gone on to use the remaining 15 eps to narrate what happens after – with an actually fascinating plot, as well as characters and relationships that have acquired depth, interest and potential.

The drama features two noteworthy organizations that I’d like to mention briefly. Mild general spoilers under the cut!  )

Would I recommend it?

Maybe? I do love the roving historians, and the ineptitude of the Ten Killing Gates is good for a laugh. There are some nice bits and characters, and the last ep is lovely. But overall, I have to say that to me, the entire drama seems like a prologue.

Where can you find it?

Ancient Detective is available for download here (hardsubbed).

Have you watched this drama? Do you think it sounds interesting? Would you like to be a roving historian? Let me know! :-)
rheasilvia: (Sleuth - Wang Zhi Huanyi)
Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty is a historical detective/action drama that revolves around three very different government officials. Together (mostly), they investigate a series of crimes and mysteries, and happen upon a conspiracy that threatens to topple the empire.

Our three heroes meet when investigating the strange murder of a Marquis’ son – a case that is inexplicably connected to the disappearance of the Crown Prince’s best friend. They go on to bicker, eat lots of delicious food, build a lovely found family with an excellent batch of secondary characters, and try very hard (and with varying success) to stay on the emperor’s good side.

All three main characters are interesting and competent in their own way, and they complement each other well. The show is at its best when they all work together and spark off each other. )

Sleuth is based on a m/m novel, like so many recent dramas, but in this case, I don’t think it’s worth watching for the book pairing. Tang Fan and Sui Zhou build a strong and interesting friendship in the series, but I don’t particularly ship them as a romantic couple; the chemistry just isn’t there for me. However. Add Wang Zhi to the mix and it’s a different story. This may be the first drama that gives me OT3 vibes.

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely! I must warn you that this drama does have a number of annoyance factors, including Tang Fan’s occasional over-the-top childishness (apparently intended to be funny?) and several very grating plot points. But even so, I find it entertaining, pretty, and a lot of fun – and it has Wang Zhi. ;-) It also does interesting and interestingly nuanced things with Chinese history, if that’s your kind of thing. So I would absolutely recommend you check it out.

Where can you find it?

The first four eps are subbed on YouTube. The entire series is available here, and also on Viki.

I found this drama thanks to [personal profile] maggie33 and just want to say: thank you, it's lovely! :-)
rheasilvia: (Guardian - Style: Better Living)
Guardian has really spoiled me! I find that I am now unreasonably irritated when shows don't give me the intense emotional connection(s) that I want to see... or only in tiny little doses.

Or when they don't give the right characters enough love.

YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. Do better, show. Be like Guardian.

Hmmph. ;-)

Taskmaster

Guys. Would you like to relax your brain with something cheerful and bizarre? Then I have a rec for you. :-)

Taskmaster is a British comedy game show that has comedians compete through a series of pointless, bizarre challenges. Tasks include things like:
- paint a picture of a horse while riding a horse,
- hide a pineapple on your person,
- put as many swedes as possible on a Swede,
- create a music video for a nursery rhyme, and so on.
It's hilarious.

Turns out I enjoy watching people take ridiculous tasks very seriously. :-) The contestants are - almost without exception - hilarious and nice and wonderful. So far there's been only a single contestant I disliked, and he is more than outweighed by a later contestant whom I loved. (You will know her by her terrifying cuddling technique, which involves chocolate cake and deranged giggling.)

The first ep is here! So far, five seasons are up on YouTube, with four (and a half) to come. I can't wait. If you check it out, I'd love to know what you think.

I came across this series because they've been issuing a number of Home Tasks, and one popped up for me - "Turn Your Bathroom into a Venue For a Great Night Out". Also quite fun.

I've also been checking out various Chinese dramas, and plan to post about them, too.

I hope you're all doing well! I will try to be around more on DW - I miss you guys. Unfortunately, it's been a bit of a spoonless time for me, but I hope to gather my cutlery soon. ;-)

Via [personal profile] naye and [personal profile] solo: A lovely new meme!

List six ships using only emojis, and see if people can guess them. I had a lot of fun with this, and since two of my chosen ships are pretty obscure, I thought I'd include an additional one so there's a proper chance of getting six right. :-)

Come play! :-)

So I was talking about The Untamed with [personal profile] galaxysoup and, you guys, I've found the perfect group noun for Lans!

A regulation of Lans. :-)

ETA:

A few more clans have acquired group nouns in the comments! Namely:

  • An extravagance of Jins (discovered by the brilliant [personal profile] glymr)

  • A devastation of Wens (also a [personal profile] glymr creation)

  • A valor of Nies (which I think suits all of them!)

None are quite as perfect as the regulation of Lans, IMO, but still. ;-)

If you are following I Ship My Adversary x Me (我嗑了对家x我的): It's been updated again! The translation is now up to 25 of 47 chapters.

Just in case one of you hasn't come across this canon yet: I Ship My Adversary x Me is a m/m cnovel, and is the most adorable, fluffy crack. It features an adorable, fluffy, very handsome and extremely bad actor beginning to believe in (and ship!) the romantic relationship a group of fans are convinced exists between him and his rival.

I think my favorite thing about the book is the ridiculous, adorable way the main character sees the world and thinks about things. An example of him marvelling at how fan-servicy his "´rival" is being lately:

Honestly speaking, ever since last night where for the second time, he tossed me a huge piece of fluff just as I was feeling despondent, whenever I see him about to throw me another piece of fluff now, I only want to lie down and shout, “Throw it! Throw it everywhere! Throw it on my face! Throw it more accurately! Don’t only throw a little at me because you think I’m weak and fragile!”

I just want to cuddle him. ;-)

It took a surprisingly long time, but [personal profile] solo and I finally finished watching The Untamed. I really enjoyed it! So of course, there is a pressing issue I must adress: NICKNAMES.

For the purposes of clever (?) commentary, [personal profile] solo and I came up with a number of nicknames while watching. We replaced some with actual names in due course, but others stuck around till the very end. ;-) (I should add that few of them are complimentary - but my surprise fave is among those with a really bad nickname, so...)

Untamed nicknames under the cut! )

I now have a number of burning questions for all of you. Namely:

1. Can you tell who these people are?*

2. Do you have nicknames for The Untamed characters?

3. Why does nobody appreciate my darling properly?

So many qestions!

*If anyone guesses all of the nicknames, I will write a drabble for them. ;-)

ETA: Unsurprisingly, there are spoilers in the comments! Just in case anyone is even slower than I in watching this. ;-)

So, I am finally watching The Flash - only about 3 years after everyone else. :-) It took me this long because I watched the first ep when the series started, and, well. Did not think it was promising. But since everyone else seems to be enjoying the series so much, I figured it must get better, and have given it another try! I started with ep2 this time, and things have been going much better.

I'm only up to S01E05, so the series hasn't really found its feet yet, but its doing well enough. Standard superhero series plots, but entertaining, with likeable characters. I like Barry and many of the secondary characters, and am happy to see what the series holds in store. It hasn't really grabbed me, but it isn't rubbing me the wrong way either, and I can see it getting there in time.

But there is one thing that I really, really dislike and that fills me with apprehension: The Iris Situation. Warning for extreme grumpiness that may harsh squee under the cut...

My grumpy thoughts on The Iris Situation - do not read if squee might be harshed. )

Feel free to spoil me for the Iris Situation, which I feel it can only be a good thing to be prepared for. Not for anything else though, please!

Luke Cage

I've been slowly watching (and really enjoying) Luke Cage; I just finished ep8, and find it an excellent show with great characters. It hasn't quite grabbed me the way Jessica Jones did, though, which I attribute to the different atmospheres of the shows. JJ involved intensely personal psychological horror and trauma and built up a very close, claustrophobic atmosphere. Luke Cage is set on a larger, more political stage and thus can't - and isn't intended to - achieve the kind of intense, riveting suspense that JJ did.

Here are two not really spoilery and one very ep-7-spoilery moments! )

So, are you watching this show? What do you think?
rheasilvia: (Default)
Am finally slowly approaching the final eps of Daredevil's second season, and my overwhelming feeling about it is...

spoiler cut for people even slower than me to watch the show )

I have eps 12 and 13 left to watch, and am actually not sure whether I particularly mind spoilers at this point. Maybe just avoid any really major ones if you comment? Thanks!
rheasilvia: (Gasp!)
Check out this Hannibal-themed Tarot deck on Kickstarter...

I never got into the show myself, but I know many of you did, and the art does look awesome. So hey, might be of interest! If it were for one of my fandoms, I'd totally back it. :-)
rheasilvia: (Default)
There has to be a Steve/Bucky fanvid to "Summer of 69", right? I mean. Can't you just SEE Bucky standing on his momma's porch in the summer of 39, promising he'd wait forever... but yeah, Steve, nothing can last forever, right? And the times, they sure are changin'.

No, I still haven't gotten over my Captain America issues, but as it turns out, I can suppress them temporarily under certain circumstances. Certain circumstances involve very good slash fanfic, to nobody's surprise.

I am so weak to good slash fanfic, it's seriously sad. (Still not reading Steve/Tony, though.)
rheasilvia: (Default)
I watched a number of first eps! Just the first eps so far, so no spoilers please.

Stitchers )

Killjoys )

Dark Matter )

Wayward Pines )

The Brink )

The Messengers )

UnReal )

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell )

So, have you seen any of these? What do you think?
rheasilvia: (Default)
Seduced by the velociraptors as seen in the trailers and gifs, I watched Jurassic World.

Well. So much squee-harshing. )

Where on earth are all the Keen/Keen fanfic epics I need to read right now?

My god, this relationship has been designed *just for me*. It is so fucked up. Tom's entire life is so fucked up. There are so many identity and trust issues. And they want each other so badly even so. I love it.

The rest of the show is kinda boring, and Reddington annoys me. Also, I really really REALLY need that tattoo on Tom's neck to go away. I mean, IMMEDIATELY.
rheasilvia: (Default)
So basically, the only reason I'm still watching Blacklist is the blind hope that Tom will return soon, and he and Elizabeth can resume their fucked-up love affair. All that other stuff that keeps happening is starting to annoy me for taking up so much time. Come on, people. Where's Tom??

I am so predictable. ;-)

Massive spoilers for the season finale of How to Get Away With Murder.  )

Has anyone but me been watching this? You should check it out, if you haven't already! This is a brilliant show. I loved the characterizations shift throughout the seasons, the utterly believable way the ducklings fell further and further into the dark spiral that started with the initial crime, all certainties, morals and inhibitions peeling away one by one. And I loved seeing how this revealed more of the essential people beneath all the trappings of upbringing and society.

It suceeded better with some characters than others, of course. It surprised me that next to Connor, my favorites ended up being Michaela and (of all people) Asher, as well as Bonnie.

I really hope this great show gets renewed! Any news on that yet?

Scandal S1

Started watching Scandal (which [personal profile] giandujakiss has mentioned favorably so often that I had to check it out *g*) and like it quite a bit. I do have some issues with S1 that I am going to mention, however, because it will make me feel better, and also because maybe someone will want to talk with me about them. :-)

Spoilers for all of S1 under the cut! )

Anyone else watching this? What do you guys think?

(I'm presently starting in on S2, so please don't spoil me!)
