rheasilvia: (Guardian OTP hazy hearts)
You guys. I have finally brought one of the three Guardian WIPs of Doom to first draft, and sent it to [personal profile] solo. It's called Something Wicked, is around 30k long, not an AU although it definitely seems like one, and just, OMG.

I've long since reached the stage where I can't tell whether the story works in any way, so I can't speak to the quality - it's possible it's completely confusing and incomprehensible. But I am so glad to get it into some kind of finished state. It's been over a year with this thing. Seriously.

Other good things have also happened!

DontStopRun created a podfic of Dangerous Knowledge, my Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty OT3 story! I am super thrilled - it's the second ever podfic for one of my stories, and I love it to bits. :-)

Also, Ominous_Rain wrote a pre-OT3 story for Sleuth, and named Dangerous Knowledge as their story's inspiration!

I am totally fine with being the founder of Sleuth OT3 fanfic. ;-) Although I honestly don't know how fans have been avoiding writing stories about these three all along.

In less good news )

Here is a random Something Wicked Snippet, to celebrate the story reaching first draft stage!

"It's okay. I have a plan." Zhao Yunlan carefully detached her hand from his arm and gave her his best reassuring smile. He didn't think it entirely worked, but that was the benefit of being the boss. You got to do stupidly risky things, and wiser heads didn't have the authority to stop you.

Da Qing followed him into the entrance hall. )

Guardian has really spoiled me! I find that I am now unreasonably irritated when shows don't give me the intense emotional connection(s) that I want to see... or only in tiny little doses.

Or when they don't give the right characters enough love.

YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. Do better, show. Be like Guardian.

Hmmph. ;-)

My excellent exchange luck has held true! I was lucky enough to receive an amazing story by [personal profile] blathering_kat as my Sundial gift. It's an intense post-canon glimpse at Shen Wei struggling to cope with what he's gone through, all (of course!) while feeling that there's nothing actually wrong; he doesn't need much sleep anyway. Lovely h/c, and an amazing atmosphere, and a perfectly Shen Wei-ish understated intensity of emotion.

Close Your Eyes by blathering_kat

"Tell me what you see when you close your eyes," he whispers into the dark.

~~~
My story was for the lovely [personal profile] enviropony, who (perhaps unwisely? *g*) showed interest in a certain character in her prompts. I'd had an idea involving that character a while back, and, well. This was the perfect excuse!
The Dixing Lord's Virgin Captive. A Romance of Ancient Dixing, set to writing by A Gentleman of Noble Lineage.
The cover depicted a bare-chested man wearing a hooded black cloak, a mask chased with silver, and thigh-high boots over extremely tight leather trousers. He held a swooning woman clad in equally impractical attire in one arm, and brandished a sword with his free hand. The woman was clutching a lollipop, and both figures were buffeted by particularly dramatic gales of wind as streams of lava flowed past their feet.
“I’m afraid I’ll have to confiscate this publication,” Shen Wei managed, sounding slightly strangled in his own ears.
A new romance genre takes Dragon City by storm. Shen Wei does not approve, and Zhao Yunlan is both ruthless and cunning.
I have now identified the five characteristic phases of my fanworks exchange experience. The process has been the same in all documented cases, so I consider it established fact.
Phase 1: False Confidence.
This seems doable! Sure, so far I have no ideas (and no time to write, either). But, hey! What could possibly go wrong?
Phase 2: Mad Writing.
Annoyingly, time keeps on passing. But no worries: I have an idea! And who needs sleep, anyway. It will work out - it's going to be a short story, after all.
Phase 3: Dramatic Despair!
WHY IS THIS NOT A SHORT STORY. WHYYYY.
Phase 4: A New Hope.
New plan: We're going with an entirely different story! And this one will be short!! Honest! I really mean it this time! (*insert crazed laughter here*)
Phase 5: Ohmygod Look At The Time.
It is done!! Is this story fit to be read and enjoyed by human beings? I have no idea! Is it short? Uhm, kind of? Where will I find the time to edit it? Muahahahaaaa!
Does this sound familiar to you? Or are you among those enviably organized creators who master exchanges with minimal BEARS, and might even juggle several exchanges at the same time?
(This post brought to you by the fact that my [community profile] sundial_exchange assignment is due on the 18th - this Saturday! Fortunately, I should be able to edit it for another week after I've added it to the AO3 collection, so the situation isn't as dire as it could be. But still.)
rheasilvia: (Guardian life ruiners)
I signed up for the [community profile] sundial_exchange at the last second - yay! Will Exchange Bears end up chasing me again? Quite possibly! But for now, I am just happy to be participating in something fannish again. And with luck, this will kick-start my writing, and I'll finally be able to finish my nearly-finished WIPs…
Dear Sundial Creator,
thank you so much for creating a fanwork for me!  )
Today, I returned from a week-long trip to find some absolutely adorable chibi Guardian stickers from the amazing [personal profile] naye waiting for me. They are so adorable! Thank you so much, naye - what a lovely gift! I will no doubt fail to actually stick them anywhere, but I will certainly cherish them, and much squee will be had. (Does anybody else find themselves unable to actually stick stickers somewhere when they surpass a certain level of appeal? I mean. The choices!)
This is definitely also an incentive to pick up my WIPs again. I was doing pretty well before, so here's hoping nothing trivial and bothersome will get in the way (work and RL, I'm looking at you).
I haven't been keeping up with DW - what have you all been doing? I hope things have been going well for you!
rheasilvia: (ZYL strength)
We won a Hugo, you guys! The AO3 was awarded the 2019 Hugo Award in the category Best Related Work - and to me that really does mean that we all won a Hugo. It's our archive, our community and our fanworks.
I am so thrilled that fanworks are gaining more and more mainstream attention and acceptance. And you've all had a hand in that development. Congratulations to you! :-)
In other news, I wrote something! Have an excerpt from my current WiP. (Errrrm. One of them.)
~~~

Da Qing materialized from the shadows around the HQ’s entrance as Yunlan swung off the motorcycle. He sauntered over with a deceptively casual air to brush lightly past his legs, tail waving in studied indifference. “Lin Jing just arrived. He’s upset. You’ll have to threaten him again, I think.”

Yunlan hmmed thoughtfully. “We’ll see.” Da Qing followed him as he pushed the bike through the SID’s doors, parking it in the lobby in blatant violation of bureau rules. The cat was still lingering when Yunlan had kicked down the bike stand and hung his helmet from the handle, so he picked him up and carried him through into the main office. Da Qing allowed it, even snuggling into him a bit when Yunlan held him close. It said a lot about how rough Yunlan must be looking, to be honest. Usually Da Qing didn’t like being carried. Yunlan was glad he was making an exception; the warm weight of his best and oldest friend was grounding, even if his cat’s affection couldn’t touch the cold, hollow loneliness he hadn’t been able to shake.

I've been waffling about posting this because I'm not terribly satisfied with it, but then I reminded myself that the Sunday Six are about celebrating having written something. And I did write something this week! That's definitely progress. :-)
rheasilvia: (Guardian life ruiners)
Yay, for once I have Sunday Sixes to post! I wrote something today - not for one of the four WIPs I already have, of course, but for something entirely new. At least this story should be fairly short, and I already have a title idea. What could go wrong?? (insert maniacal giggle here)

He woke with a full-body jerk, soaked in cold sweat and the taste of blood in his mouth. His hand tried to close around the hilt of a sword that wasn’t there; he groped across unexpected softness, tangled himself in a blanket and fell heavily to the floor.

What the - damn it. Damn it, how could he have been so careless - he froze, but if an enemy was in the vicinity it was far too late, and - where was his sword? How -

He put a hand to his stomach, but the skin was whole and unbroken, and nothing hurt. It was dark, he was unarmed, and he had no idea where he was, but there was a solid surface at his back, and he was not injured. If there was anyone here who would harm him, he hoped for their sake they had brought reinforcements.

My contribution to the 520 Exchange was a story for the lovely [personal profile] demitas, who asked for a case fic and Zhao Xinci. This turned out to involve unexpected pitfalls, but I managed on the second try. ;-)

Title: Prince of Thorns
Author: Sylvia / [personal profile] rheasilvia
Relationship: Shěn Wēi/Zhào Yúnlán
Rating: Gen
Length: 6,888 words
Story Notes: Betaed by [personal profile] bonibaru and [personal profile] solo, who were tremendously helpful and encouraging. Thank you again!

Summary: Steel was the only thing that had a discernible effect on the rose thicket. Dark energy splashed uselessly against it, absorbed without a trace. Cold that would slow molecules ghosted across the fresh green leaves as a harmless frost, melting away easily in the afternoon sun. Fire… Shen Wei had not dared to try fire.

A rose thicket encages the SID, Zhao Yunlan is trapped in unnatural sleep, and Shen Wei is forced to rely on Zhao Xinci’s assistance.

The first Guardian 520 Exchange went live yesterday, and it is glorious! 39 amazing new Guardian fanworks await - it's like a particularly wonderful fannish birthday. So far, I haven't had the chance to read much yet, but I am all aglow with the anticipation.

I am so amused at the fact the exchange's minimum wordcount was 300, BTW. This was clearly a clever ploy to lure in the unwary.

I received an absolutely lovely story by [personal profile] jo_lasalle, who took two of my prompts and did a "mix-and-merge-with-some-variation", with the most wonderful results. Clearly, I win at life exchanges. ;-)

Title: Call Me Maybe
Author: Jo Lasalle / [personal profile] jo_lasalle
Relationship: Shěn Wēi/Zhào Yúnlán
Rating: Explicit
Length: 10,563 words

Summary: A story in which Zhao Yunlan is good at paperwork, Shen Wei is an unreliable borrower of clothes, and the Black Cloaked Envoy needs better occupational health and safety provisions.

520 bears

rheasilvia: (ZYL exasperated with lollipop)
The 520 Day Reverse Exchange seemed so harmless - a 300 word minimum sounds very doable! No pressure, right?

So, this is how that is going down.

Crickets chirp… time passes. The deadline approaches.

Idea that is somewhat late, but not terribly late: Hey! I think I’ve got something! )

Man, I look forward to being able to read again. Also, sleep.

How are you guys doing? Any bears approaching?

rheasilvia: (Guardian - Shen Wei bookish)
From what I can tell, Guardian approaches time the same way epic poetry does - that is, it almost always seems to be measured in numbers more notable for dramatic value than likelihood (ten thousand years! a thousand years! ten years! NOW!).

Even so, I've put together a timeline of the Special Investigation Department's history. Please be aware that it contains spoilers for the entire series.

SID Timeline )

If you have any additions or I got something wrong, please let me know! I'd be very grateful for input on how much time passes between the SID-relevant events of the series itself, for one thing.

Alternately, tell me about your SID feels! :-)

Title: Lost Kittens
Author: Sylvia / [personal profile] rheasilvia
Fandom: Guardian (TV)
Rating: Gen
Story Notes: Betaed by [personal profile] solo. Thank you again!

Summary: For such a rigid and inflexible man, Chief Zhao could be surprisingly capricious. Why would he send a distinguished cat like Da Qing to deal with his drunk, wayward and entirely objectionable offspring? Humans, seriously.

OR:

Da Qing and Zhao Yunlan's first meeting. (For a certain value of "first".)

Lost Kittens

When Da Qing found him, the kid was pretty much wasted. Given the furrow of Chief Zhao's brow when he'd pulled Da Qing aside earlier, it wasn't that big a surprise – although it was still odd to see anyone related to the Chief spread out in his chair like that, every limb flung in a different direction.

Title: Hidden Charms
Author: Sylvia / [personal profile] rheasilvia
Fandoms: Guardian (TV) and X/1999
Pairings: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan, Sakurazuka Seishirou/Sumeragi Subaru
Rating: Not rated
Story Notes: Every fandom needs weird crossovers. Let me make a start! Betaed by [personal profile] solo, who is a great enabler. :-)

Summary: Combatants from another world unexpectedly enter Dragon City, the Black-Cloaked Envoy acquires an interesting reputation, and nobody has a terribly good time.

Hidden Charms

On Wednesday, a portal to another universe opened south of the river, over the old town hall. It swirled shut again almost immediately, but in the brief moment of its existence, a kid wearing a baseball cap, a monk, a schoolgirl and a guy in a trench coat managed to fall through. They then put half of Dragon City under a force field, jumped around on top of various buildings, and threw bolts of electricity, swords, doves, hawks and various other missiles at each other. Dozens of people had recorded it on their phones, or Yunlan would probably have considered at least the birds down to creative license.

Yunlan couldn't believe he'd missed it.

The m/m novel the Guardian series is based on can be read online – most of it has already been translated into English. It has a large fanbase, and many Guardian fans enjoy both canons. However, before reading the novel as a fan of the series, it may be good to know one thing:

The Guardian novel is very different from the Guardian series.

If you decide to check out the novel, I would strongly recommend reading it as its own thing, entirely independent of the series. Because otherwise, things get weird. Text and pics behind the cut! )
rheasilvia: (Quill)
2018 was my Yuletide premiere, and I got very lucky with both the story I received and my assignment, which allowed me to write what I most wanted to write.

kyrilu gifted this lovely, sweet slice-of-life Guardian story to me:

Five Ugly Articles of Clothing that Zhao Yunlan Gave Shen Wei

And the one time that Shen Wei gave clothes to Zhao Yunlan. (Sort of.)

I wrote this Guardian story (which needs a better summary and is also Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan) for Trobadora:

Fever

The flu is going around, and Zhao Yunlan makes a surprising discovery.

It was great fun, all things told, and I might well participate again this year. Especially if I can avoid the sudden RL end-of-the-year madness. (As you may be able to tell by the lateness of this post, I am still in the process of catching up to life again. Ack.)

Without apropos: The world needs an icon reading „Anachronistic Lollipop“. Alternately, this should be the name of a band.
rheasilvia: (Rainbow hearts)
Before I start posting fanfic and talking about Guardian, I’d like to give you all some idea of what this fandom is about. So!

Guardian is a Chinese fantasy/scifi series about a cop who heads a specialized team for supernatural* crime. Zhao Yunlan – the cop – is supported in his endeavors by Shen Wei, a mild-mannered professor who acts as a consultant, and who frequently jumps in to save Zhao Yunlan and/or the day. He does this surprisingly effectively, because Shen Wei is secretly an immensely powerful being known as the Black-Cloaked Envoy, one of the rulers of the supernatural* realm. Shen Wei has also been in love with Zhao Yunlan for thousands of years, for complex and spoilery reasons that don’t need exploring at this juncture.

* I use „supernatural“ as shorthand for „technically scientifically explainable scifi-genre-like goings-ons that are for all intents and purposes supernatural“. More on this in a bit!

The entire series is available on YouTube, with subtitles, and is a delight. I encourage you to check it out if you have any interest in gay romance, or fantasy/scifi with an unusual slant.

More - including pictures - behind the cut!  )

If you do give this series a try, I’d love to know what you think! :-)
