Turns out I am a True Neutral Gnome Wizard.
Sounds about right, except for the gnome part. I hadn't noticed I was particularly short, but I guess everything is relative. ;-)
How about you - what kind of D&D character would you be?

15 characters meme: the stories
Aug. 24th, 2014 02:19 amWith a slight delay, I present my responses to the 15 characters meme! I absolutely love the questions I got - you guys are brilliant. :-) And I would so love to read some of these crossovers...
This was my list of characters:
1. Ray Kowalski (Due South)
2. Benton Fraser (Due South)
3. Lex Luthor (Smallville, early seasons)
4. Cameron (The Sarah Connor Chronicles)
5. John Connor (The Sarah Connor Chronicles)

( Blackmail! John Connor knows Erik Lehnsherr's guilty secret. What is it, and what does it take to keep it quiet? )
( Cameron is being interviewed and is asked which five of the other 14 people on the list she would invite to a dinner party. )
( Is Erik's marriage to Buffy doomed or blissful? )
( If Benton Fraser, Aeryn Sun, John Connor and Harold Finch were teamed up, would they fight crime or be criminal masterminds? Who would be the group leader? )
( How does Charles Xavier seduce Duncal MacLeod? )
( Ray Kowalski and John Reese are winners of [Country's] Got Talent - what is their act and what unfortunate country have they inflicted it on? )
( Lex Luthor, Cameron and John Reese have just been stranded on an abandoned space station! How do they cope and what do they do next? )
( Cameron and John Connor go on a road trip. Where do they go, do they get lost and argue about whose fault it is, where do they stop for food, and who forgot to pack the map, anyway? )
( Ray Kowalski, John Reese and Methos have a reality show. What is it about and what do they do on it? )
( Ray Kowalski and Lex Luthor are in a relationship. Benton Fraser, Erik Lehnsherr, Cameron, Harold Finch and Duncan MacLeod find out. What are their reactions? )
( All 15 characters have to compete in a drag queen contest. Who are the top 5 finalists? )
( John Reese bakes something for Aeryn Sun. What? )
( Ray Kowalski, John Connor and Buffy are stuck in an elevator. What happens? )
( Is Duncan still in love with Methos? How does Erik Lehnsherr feel about that? )
( Ray Kowalski and Benton Fraser have a love child. Which actor should play said love child? )

Character meme
Aug. 16th, 2014 09:57 pmThe return of an old favorite, last seen at
killabeez!
1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.
2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"
3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.
I have my list ready, so please ask me questions! :-)

LJ friending meme

I'm pretty late to the party, but hope to find time to look through all the entries and meet some new people. :-) LJ has been too quiet lately!
Getting to know you!
Feb. 2nd, 2013 05:54 pmSince I don't know half of you half as well as I should like,* I thought I'd try a "getting to know you"-question!
How did you choose your LJ username?
For me, it all started with the fact that I am title- and pseudonym-impaired. Right from the start, the name I used in fandom was my real name: Sylvia. When I migrated from mailing lists to LJ, I wanted to claim
sylvia, but of course it was already taken. (I actually wrote to
sylvia asking her whether I could take over the name, since her LJ was obviously abandoned. Unsurprisingly, she never responded.) I considered variations of the name, but wasn't happy with any of the ones that were available.
So I considered historical, literary and/or mythological precursors, and immediately settled on Rhea Silvia. I'm a mythology buff, so she is highly relevant to my interests. She herself is mostly side-lined in the myths (someone's daughter, someone's lover, someone's mother and so forth), but her mythological context still makes her interesting for me.
How about you? How did your name come about?
* Sorry about the random Tolkien quote. ;-)

Wanted: Prompts!
Jan. 10th, 2013 01:40 amHelp me, Obi-wan Friendslist! I mean to drabble, and I could use some prompts!
Please give me:
- A pairing/combination of characters*
- An alternate universe, OR
- A trope, OR
- Another scenario or prompt
* I know me, and so I know that inspiration will not come if it's a pairing I have no interest in (or, of course, if it's people / a fandom I simply don't know). So do feel free to prompt whatever you want, but be aware that if it does involve a pairing of this kind - say, Sheppard/McKay or some such -, it may end in tears.**
** Just kidding. It will probably end in me looking clueless and going "uhm" instead. And in a wordcount of an even 0.
Also...
Day 8
In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter.
So. I inadvertently started posting a wip last year, which, uhm. I'm not sure how that happened? Anyway, I most definitely want to finish "Perturbation Theory", because I well know the frustration an unfinished wip holds for readers.
Also, due to circumstances that don't need exploring at this juncture, I have fallen hopelessly behind in responding to feedback. I feel horribly guilty about this, and really want to go back to responding in a timely fashion to every comment.
I also want to shrug off my fannish guilt. Le sigh.

Catching up!
Jan. 7th, 2013 11:42 pmEven though this challenge is low-pressure and has no deadlines, I still want to catch up. This may well be a symptom. ;-)
Day 3
( Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. )
Day 4
( In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. )
Day 5 is in progress. :-)
Day 6
( In your own space, pimp three comms or challenges and explain why you love them. )
Day 7
( In your own space, share something non-fannish about yourself. A passion or a hobby or a talent, something that people might not know about you. )

Fanfic Recs (Snowflake Challenge)
Jan. 6th, 2013 12:54 amDay 2
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.
Have a completely mixed bag of wonderful fanfic in (relatively) rare fandoms and pairings!
The Hawk Killer by
glitterburn
Onmyouji, Abe no Seimei/Minamoto no Hiromasa
Lovely, long, plotty and wonderfully characterized Onmyouji story that can (and should!) be read as original fiction. Slight AU.
Author's summary: Impoverished provincial nobleman Minamoto no Hiromasa arrives in Heian-Kyo to restore his family’s pride, but meets with resistance at every turn until the eccentric and wealthy Lord Seimei offers to take Hiromasa under his wing.
this is not a chick flick by bookesque
Greek Mythology, Hades/Persephone
Hilarious, wonderfully written, and unexpectedly sweet. Hades falls in love, but is clueless as to what to do about it. The other gods insist on giving advice. This goes about as well as you'd expect, considering that Zeus is the gods' foremost authority and his best trick is turning into a giant animal to abduct his crush.
The Death of Girl Number Two by cm(mumblemutter)
Profit, Gail Koner/Jim Profit
Twisted, disturbing, and sweet in a really disquieting way. Perfect, and perfectly Profit.
Author's summary: Jim Profit needs a wife. Gail doesn't volunteer.
My Elf Policy, by
papersky, and
Elf Insurance by
stakebait
Origfic poems based on misread spam - funny, witty and all-around lovely!
These Bonds are Yours by olavina
Teen Wolf, Danny/Jackson
Canon reinterpretation: Jackson comes up with a solution to the Kanima problem. Very short, but absolutely on target, and makes so. much. sense.
Dirty Work (and sequels Wait and See and Come and Go with Me) by kalena
Chuck, Chuck/Casey
Casey hits upon a sure-fire way to keep the asset loyal and calm: sex. Everything would be going perfectly, too, if Casey weren't getting distracted.
They Say of the Elves, by brancher
Lord of the Rings, Legolas/Gimli
The hazards of intercultural relationships. Sweet and poetic and funny, all at the same time.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge
Jan. 5th, 2013 01:17 amDo you guys know the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? I only just found out about it, thanks to
analise010, and I'm going to give it a try. The challenge aims to let fans be proud, bold and loud about all of our fannish pursuits, to be passionate and unafraid, and to have faith in ourselves; in short, it wants us to go forth and be the special fannish snowflakes that we are. ;-) Since there's no pressure, no firm deadlines, and complete freedom to do pretty much whatever you want, it doesn't even matter that I'm off to a late start.
How it works:
Every day for the first 15 days of January, we're going to post a fannish challenge. It could be something as simple as reccing fanworks to sharing a piece of canon that you love.
Day 1
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Yeah. Way outside of my comfort zone, which - of course - is the point. So, the recs!
The Persistence of Iron - X-Men First Class, Science Fiction Alternate Universe (can be read as "non-fanfic" SciFi)
48,000 words. AU. Charles/Erik slash. Rated PG-13.
( Why this story? )
Partners - X-Files, Alternate Universe, dark-ish
11,000 words. AU. Potentially disturbing content. M/K slash. Rated R.
( Why this story? )
In a Strange Land - Medieval Literature Crossover
2,000 words. Crossover of the Nibelungenlied with Eschenbach's Parzival. Gen. Rated G.
( Why this story? )

My elbow and wrist are still not quite back to normal, but much, much better. Also, I now have very fashionable colored bandages in azure, Prussian blue, spring green, crimson, fuchsia and black. It makes all the difference. :-) Of course, I have not spent my weekend employing my returned ability to be productive in order to be productive. Instead, I have lazed about, drunk gallons of tea, read fanfic, watched Vampire Diaries, and otherwise frittered my time away. I also brunched with
ellensmithee, and entirely failed to feed myself like a responsible adult. OTOH, that cake did have fruit in it, and there actually was fruit on top of the frozen yoghurt.
So, it is time for a meme to wake me up and get me back into the zone.*
Ask me questions from the list below! I've taken
destina's example and helpfully removed the ones I don't want to answer ahead of time. Which doesn't mean that some of the ones I left in won't make me think, or that I might not have good answers for every one.
( Comment with one or more numbers and I will answer them. If you don't specify a particular fandom, I will choose one on my own to answer with. )
* I don't know what zone exactly, but it sounded good. So.

Character meme
Jul. 31st, 2012 10:29 pmPick a character from a fandom I have at least a glancing acquaintance with and I'll tell you:
- Why I love them / why I wish they'd go die in a fire.
- My OTP (if I have one) / favorite pairing for the character.
- My favorite friendship pairing for this character.
- An unpopular opinion about this character.
- One thing I wish would [have] happen[ed] with this character in canon.
- An idea I have for the character that I haven't written yet / that I will never write.

Music meme
Jun. 6th, 2012 08:54 pmSeen over at
synecdoche_and's LJ a while ago!
The rules of the meme:
Post the first few lines from 20 songs on your playlist and have people guess what songs they are.
( Since I don't have a playlist, I loaded every song in my music archive into the player, hit random, and then threw out the ones I never listen to. )

So much "I wish".
Mar. 5th, 2012 11:48 pmI got this result for a page or so of an original fic I'm writing. Unfortunately, I have to say this is not true... And not just because I cannot ever hope to approach the man's dirty double entendres and lewd puns. But I am insanely pleased even so. :-)
The JE epic is supposedly written like Mark Twain, btw. Leaving aside the fact that Mark Twain wrote about a hundred times better than I - even though it could perhaps be argued we are at about the same level when it comes to dirty double entendres and lewd puns ;-) - I think I have a vague idea of the similarities in sentence construction the program might have picked up on.
Really interesting!
Anonymous Fic Feedback Meme
Jan. 23rd, 2012 11:53 pmFor the first time, I'm taking part in an anonymous fanfic feedback meme!
My thread is here. Concrit is very welcome.
My thread is here. Concrit is very welcome.
Three more "3 sentence" meme story fragments. Again, they are somewhat longer than 3 sentences, and are in order of striking inspiration. Four more to go!
Junno is an alien vampire baker, Ryo is a vampire prosecutor. Needless to say, sparkliness ensues. (for
glitterburn)
( The cupcake was decorated with a smooth, glistening cap of frosting the color of arterial blood. It was topped with an anatomically correct white chocolate heart, all of it decorated by a drift of edible silver sparkles. )
Junno/Ryo in an office AU. (for
lulumeow)
( 'You told me that you can deal with my shoulders looking the way they do, but that my cheekbones are just unfair. You, uhm, also announced to the marketing department that you were going to do tequila shots off of, errrr, uhm. And I, uh, well, I was kinda drunk too, so I - but fortunately they didn't have any limes, so you had to drink the tequila straight from the bottle instead. And then you -' )
Alicia and Kalinda in the Star Trek:TNG verse (for
jona)
( 'He's not Vulcan,' Kalinda said. She fairly vibrated with contained energy, her nose ridges flushing a dusky rose with the joy of discovery. )

Space, Pirates, Spies and Steampunk!
Jan. 10th, 2012 10:49 pmThe first "3 sentence" meme story fragments, which are considerably longer than 3 sentences in most cases, and are in order of striking inspiration. ;-)
Mulder and Krycek in space (for

Vetinari/Vimes pirate AU. (for
dragonaph)
( There had never been a Pirate Admiral before, and Captain Vimes still wasn't sure how he felt about the idea. )
Dean/Krycek in a spy caper (for
without_me)
( Dean knew he wasn't alone as soon as he eased open the window to the study. )
Abe no Seimei and an additional character in a steampunk world (for
torch)
( Hiromasa's stomach lurched as the zeppelin tilted sharply, drifting to the left as it hit an eddy in the ether. )
Stay tuned for more! I'm also still taking prompts, because I'm crazy that way. ;-)

2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Icon Meme: The Return.
Aug. 4th, 2011 07:51 pmHere's a new edition of an old meme favorite of mine!
The rules:
All characters depicted in my icons are listed and paired off in alphabetical order. This time I have decided to sort the characters by last name, or throne name in one instance.
James Kirk / Kiryuu Touga
( This is definitely a one-night-stand, with neither party interested in an actual relationship of any kind. )
Alex Krycek / Leonard McCoy
( Somewhat bizarre, but not impossible. :-) )
Menkheperre (Thutmose) / Fox Mulder
( This pairing is clearly the result of magical sex pollen being inadvertently released from an ancient relic. )
Nishikido Ryo / Oilien
( Ryo, Ryo, you really shouldn't spend so much time hanging out in dubious restrooms… )
Saionji Kyoichi / Sakurazuka Seishirou
( Despite my initial reaction when I saw this pairing, I now think this works, in a weird way. )
Sha Gojyo / Spock
( ROFL! Oh, this would be such fun. )
Taguchi Junnosuke / Nyota Uhura
( Awww. Cute! These two are just adorable together (and also highly decorative). )
Dean Winchester / Yellow Ranger
( My favorite crack pairing of the bunch )
