Themes: Angst with a happy ending, Established relationship, Hurt/comfort, AU: canon divergence

Summary: A canon divergent AU after 'Common Ground'
“We just don’t have the resources or the facilities to care for him here. I wish that circumstances were different, you have no idea how much I wish that, but the fact remains. My medical recommendation is for us to send him back to Earth.”

Rodney refuses to leave John behind.

Reccer's Notes: In this story, John isn't given back his years after they were taken from him in Common Ground by Todd the Wraith, so he's very old and frail. Elizabeth and the Atlantis expedition are shocked when, after they decide to send John back to Earth for care and treatment (and to die), Rodney resigns and goes with him. However, the first obstacle to that is of course John, who half kills himself angrily rejecting Rodney and telling him he doesn't want him to come. The story is about the struggle they both face with John so frail, scared and ashamed, and Rodney, trying to cope while grieving and exhausted - and not too physically well himself. SG1 rally around to help, as do Teyla and Ronon back in Pegasus, and, well, this is the angst with a happy ending tag, after all. An at-times gruelling, but sometimes funny and overall heartwarming read, with great characterisation.

While on the topic of Genre Mystery I also want to write up Nev Marsh's Murder in Old Bombay, a book marketed and titled as mystery-qua-mystery that I do not think really succeeds as either a mystery or a romance. However! It absolutely nails it as a kind of genre that we don't have as much anymore as a genre but that I really unironically love: picaresque adventure through a richly-realized historical milieu in which our protagonist happens by chance to stumble into, across, around, and through various significant events.

(I said this to [personal profile] genarti, and she said, 'that kind of book absolutely does still exist,' and okay, true, yes, it does, but it doesn't exist as Genre! it gets published as Literary Fiction and does not proliferate in mass-market paperback and mass-market paperback is where I want to be looking for it.)

Murder in Old Bombay is set in 1892 and focuses on Number One Sherlock Holmes Fan Captain Jim Agnihotri, an Anglo-Indian Orphan of Mysterious Parentage who while convalescing in hospital becomes obsessed with the unsolved murders of two local Parsi women -- a new bride and her teenaged sister-in-law -- who fell dramatically out of a clock tower to their deaths.

Having left the British Army, and finding himself somewhat at loose ends, Captain Jim goes to write an article about the murder and soon finds himself engaged as private detective to the grieving family. In the course of trying to solve the mystery, he falls in love with the whole family -- including and especially but not exclusively the Spirited Young Socialite Daughter -- and also wanders all around India bumping into various Battles, Political Intrigues and High-Tension Situations.

Why do I say the mystery does not work? Well, this is the author's first book, and you can sort of tell in the way the actual clues to the mystery become assembled: a lot of, 'oh, I picked up this piece of paper! conveniently it tells me exactly what I need to know!' and 'I went to the this location and the first person I saw happened to be the person I was looking for, and we fell immediately into conversation and he told me everything!' You know, you can see the strings.

Why do I say the romance does not work? Well, it's the most by-the-numbers relationship in the book ... Diana has exactly all the virtues that you'd expect of a Spirited Young Parsi Socialite from 1892 written in 2020, and lacks all of the vices that you'd expect likewise. Jim thinks she's the bees' knees, but alas! he is a poor army captain of mysterious parentage and class and community divide them. Every time they even come close to actually talking about their different beliefs and prejudices the book immediately pulls back and goes Look! she's so Spirited! It's fine.

However, the portrait of place and time is so rich and fun -- Nev Marsh talks a bit in the afterword about how much the central family and community in question draws on her own family history, and she is clearly having a wonderful time doing it. The setting feels confident in a way that plot doesn't quite, and the setting is unusual and interesting enough to find in an English-language mystery that this goes a long way for me. And, structurally, although the twists involving the Mystery were rarely satisfying to me, I loved it every time historical events came crashing into the plot and forced Captain Jim to stop worrying about the mystery for a few chapters and have some Historical Adventure instead. My favorite portion of the book is the middle part, which he spends collecting a small orphanage's worth of lost children and then is so sad when it turns out most of them do have living parents and he has to give them back. I'm also sad that you had to give the orphans back, Captain Jim.

My workplace has decided to call all "local" employees back to the office two days a week. (Where "local" is within a certain mileage radius, a radius I am UNFORTUNATELY just barely inside.) It doesn't start until September, so my brain has of course decided THIS is the thing to focus on right now.

At first I was pretty concerned, because the company makes all their decisions based on one thing: PROFIT. And calling employees back to the office does not increase revenue or decrease costs in any obvious way. It seems POSSIBLE that the goal is to make long-time (aka well-paid) employees who've grown accustomed to working from home quit, and then either not replace them at all, or replace them with lower-paid employees who will be more desperate, given the absolute nightmare of the job market right now.

But that's a pretty complex plan for a company that decided to pour resources into the brilliant marketing strategy of 'change the color of the cap on the bottles.' And I think there's a non-zero chance that I've forgotten the not-so-secret third reason the company does things: someone with power acting for the sake of acting.

Because the company got a new CEO late last year, and now THIS year the first quarter wasn't as successful as predicted. (I can't even begin to express what a surprise this should NOT have been to anyone.) But I'm 10,000% sure that the new CEO has been getting enormous pressure from THEIR bosses (parent company and grandparent company) to FIX THINGS. I assume they've been hearing WHAT IS YOUR ACTION PLAN TO TURN THIS AROUND??? fairly constantly.

And I guess I can understand that the new CEO would like an answer other than 'this seems pretty normal actually, probably we shouldn't upend everything that's been working for five years' so what better action plan than to rearrange the deck desk chairs? ESPECIALLY when it can be classified as "aligning" with the policies of the parent company? Action taken, egos soothed all around, new CEO can pat themselves on the back for a job well done.

In which a spy comes in from the cold. Overall a worthy conclusion, I thought, with some minor nitpicks.

Spoilers were there for the Ballad of Kleya and Luthen )

In conclusion: truly a great show, and I hope the creative team will get many more works to produce in whichever universe.

Speaking of creative people in other universes, last week I learned JMS has emigrated to the UK and sees employement there. This caused a great many people to wish he'd become the next Doctor Who showrunner. To which I say: nonsense, a Blake's 7 reboot is clearly the British show for him to run! Crusade had definite B7 overtones already.

My phone's been sort of iffy about the charge cord for a while, but in the last week or so it stopped working entirely. BUT! Yesterday I was one of the day's lucky 10,000! [personal profile] starandrea revealed to me the secrets of using a toothpick to clean the phone charge port!

NOTE 1: the internet is Conflicted about whether this is a good idea or not, but my feeling is 'the phone didn't work before and now it does,' so I'm in favor

NOTE 2: it wasn't a big deal to only be able to use the wireless charger, except that the case I put on for this month doesn't work with it, and adding the extra step of 'take case off' every time I wanted to charge my phone definitely tipped the scale against it

NOTE 3: it probably says something that I genuinely just thought the charge port would just stop working after a couple years, and that was a normal thing to expect

(Extremely tempted to write "oh Tuesday, we're really in it now!" and leave it at that.)

But ACTUALLY I attended an extremely 'why are we here and what is the purpose of this meeting' work meeting yesterday, and was left more baffled at the end than the beginning. Still have no idea what the purpose of the meeting was.

It did, however, include an extended baseball metaphor which I did not follow AT ALL. Something about winning? Or maybe losing? Or maybe winning after a losing streak? It was definitely about baseball. Other than that, I've got nothing.

The total failure of this metaphor to communicate with me in any meaningful way is still making me laugh today.

This past weekend, we finally got two full days of perfect gardening weather (dry and not too hot), so naturally, I'm partially crippled this morning. T. and I have an annual joke about how I inevitably "overdo" it when the weather finally turns but am somehow also surprised to find myself in agony. I'm pleased to report that this year, the pain is manageable and not nearly as pervasive as it has been in past years, and I attribute the relative reduction of post-garden-work pain to both yoga (which makes me more flexible and stronger) and weight-lifting (which also increases my strength). My neck and the tops of my shoulders are a bit stiff, but I am otherwise doing pretty well today.

I enjoy getting exercise that is purposeful, i.e. gardening, and am pleased that I am able to get out into the gardens once more. Do you have a regular activity that also gives you exercise (i.e. walking to and from work, taking a stroll on a work break, etc.)? It feels somehow like cheating to get fit AND achieve something else at the same time, doesn't it?

Anyway, as usual, please share how your week has been, fitness-wise and/or otherwise. :-)
