I confess I have a weakness for possessive!Hakkai, as well... and for the kappa question, too. Considering that youkai are an entirely different species, there must be huge differences that canon only vaguely touches upon - and if canon can't take time to go into these differences, hey, that's what fanfic is for. *g*
