Getting to know you!

Since I don't know half of you half as well as I should like,* I thought I'd try a "getting to know you"-question!

How did you choose your LJ username?

For me, it all started with the fact that I am title- and pseudonym-impaired. Right from the start, the name I used in fandom was my real name: Sylvia. When I migrated from mailing lists to LJ, I wanted to claim sylvia, but of course it was already taken. (I actually wrote to sylvia asking her whether I could take over the name, since her LJ was obviously abandoned. Unsurprisingly, she never responded.) I considered variations of the name, but wasn't happy with any of the ones that were available.

So I considered historical, literary and/or mythological precursors, and immediately settled on Rhea Silvia. I'm a mythology buff, so she is highly relevant to my interests. She herself is mostly side-lined in the myths (someone's daughter, someone's lover, someone's mother and so forth), but her mythological context still makes her interesting for me.

How about you? How did your name come about?

Well, this is dull. CaRose was my own nickname for myself when I couldn't pronounce Monica Rose. My parents called me that for a while. I don't know why they stopped.

And there was already a carose when I joined LJ, so I did the conventional thing and added the last two digits of the year I was born.

This is not a dull tale at all! I love hearing about nicknames and how they came about. Now I know that your LJ name has RL tradition. :-)

I've been signing my artworks with my initials since I was in school, when I went online in 1992, it was a nobrainer to keep it when publishing stories. Since AKK was taken on LJ, there's actually AKK_, but I joined Dreamwidth early enough to avoid "the tentakle". ;)

I understand entirely that you wanted to keep the artistic "pseudonym" you already had and identified with... though of course it's not really a pseud in your case. :-) (I've always found it cool that you're so open with your real name, btw. It's a statement, in a way; that the fannish writing you do is just one more facet of who you are, and you have no need to be shy about it. More power to you.)

Attaching my name to my fics was a conscious decision back then. So many of my friends were dead-out scared about being found out what they write online and I decided that I do not want that kind of stress.
If people have a problem with the stories I write, they'll also have a problem with my imagination soon enough. Better to have things snap early instead of fretting oneself to death over "what if somebody notices that..." (and so far, the people I work with are much too happy about my language skills being so honed as that they'd complain about my way honing them! ;)

ok so my name does not come from the akira everyone thinks it does infact i only saw that movie last year, when i was first getting into anime my friend went to a convention and brought me back a book filled with like one chapter from many differnt manga and i read it and fell in love with one called Cresent Moon now several years later i own all of the series and i am named after the werewolf creature in the series because he and i are a lot alike :)

I had indeed assumed your name referred to the Akira everyone thinks of - mostly because it's the only Akira I know. :-)
