Sneaky streptococcus

Second bout of tonsilitis in six weeks; like the last one, it is smart enough to pretend not to be bacterial so the doctor won't prescribe antibiotics. Undercover bacteria masquerading as a viral infection... the wonders of evolution. Last time, the critters' cover was blown in the end - the antibiotics did the job when I finally got them. So this time, the doctor wants to grow a culture and take a mug-shot to see who exactly we're dealing with. While I applaud this in theory, in practice I'm not getting antibiotics until the results are in. Which will not be before Monday.

This has the potential to turn very nasty. Also, want to bet that no bacteria will grow in the culture, everyone will continue to tell me it's viral, and I will not get any antibiotics? I'd try to grow my own, but I'm allergic to penicillin.

I hope so, too. Unfortunastely I'm feeling pretty lousy, which sucks beyond the telling. :-( I'd love to meet up with you and catch up and complain about my odd chaste characters... even Tim and his king are more obviously hot for each other than these dudes.

I frequently have a similar problem and I can often hold the worst of it at bay for a few days using an iodine gargle (the brand here is Betadine). Eventually I need antibiotics, but in the gap between "let's grow a culture" and "oh, it was bacterial!" this helps me. Hope you're feeling much better soon.

I know Betadine*! I do still have some, and will use it, although for some reason I've never had the impression it helped me. (Hard to tell with this kind of thing, though.) Also, I kinda hate gargling for some reason.

It's oddly encouraging that the culture led to a conclusive positive in your case; I am 1oo% certain it is bacterial, since I've never had anything like this that wasn't, so at this point I'm just nervous nobody will want to prescribe me antibiotics although I know they will help.

ETA: My version is actually called Betaisodona. Pretty sure it's exactly the same thing though. *g*
