So, I am finally watching The Flash - only about 3 years after everyone else. :-) It took me this long because I watched the first ep when the series started, and, well. Did not think it was promising. But since everyone else seems to be enjoying the series so much, I figured it must get better, and have given it another try! I started with ep2 this time, and things have been going much better.

I'm only up to S01E05, so the series hasn't really found its feet yet, but its doing well enough. Standard superhero series plots, but entertaining, with likeable characters. I like Barry and many of the secondary characters, and am happy to see what the series holds in store. It hasn't really grabbed me, but it isn't rubbing me the wrong way either, and I can see it getting there in time.

But there is one thing that I really, really dislike and that fills me with apprehension: The Iris Situation. Warning for extreme grumpiness that may harsh squee under the cut...

My grumpy thoughts on The Iris Situation - do not read if squee might be harshed. )

Feel free to spoil me for the Iris Situation, which I feel it can only be a good thing to be prepared for. Not for anything else though, please!

Luke Cage

I've been slowly watching (and really enjoying) Luke Cage; I just finished ep8, and find it an excellent show with great characters. It hasn't quite grabbed me the way Jessica Jones did, though, which I attribute to the different atmospheres of the shows. JJ involved intensely personal psychological horror and trauma and built up a very close, claustrophobic atmosphere. Luke Cage is set on a larger, more political stage and thus can't - and isn't intended to - achieve the kind of intense, riveting suspense that JJ did.

Here are two not really spoilery and one very ep-7-spoilery moments! )

So, are you watching this show? What do you think?

Am finally slowly approaching the final eps of Daredevil's second season, and my overwhelming feeling about it is...

spoiler cut for people even slower than me to watch the show )

I have eps 12 and 13 left to watch, and am actually not sure whether I particularly mind spoilers at this point. Maybe just avoid any really major ones if you comment? Thanks!

Check out this Hannibal-themed Tarot deck on Kickstarter...

I never got into the show myself, but I know many of you did, and the art does look awesome. So hey, might be of interest! If it were for one of my fandoms, I'd totally back it. :-)

There has to be a Steve/Bucky fanvid to "Summer of 69", right? I mean. Can't you just SEE Bucky standing on his momma's porch in the summer of 39, promising he'd wait forever... but yeah, Steve, nothing can last forever, right? And the times, they sure are changin'.

No, I still haven't gotten over my Captain America issues, but as it turns out, I can suppress them temporarily under certain circumstances. Certain circumstances involve very good slash fanfic, to nobody's surprise.

I am so weak to good slash fanfic, it's seriously sad. (Still not reading Steve/Tony, though.)
rheasilvia: (Default)
I watched a number of first eps! Just the first eps so far, so no spoilers please.

Stitchers )

Killjoys )

Dark Matter )

Wayward Pines )

The Brink )

The Messengers )

UnReal )

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell )

So, have you seen any of these? What do you think?

Seduced by the velociraptors as seen in the trailers and gifs, I watched Jurassic World.

Well. So much squee-harshing. )

Where on earth are all the Keen/Keen fanfic epics I need to read right now?

My god, this relationship has been designed *just for me*. It is so fucked up. Tom's entire life is so fucked up. There are so many identity and trust issues. And they want each other so badly even so. I love it.

The rest of the show is kinda boring, and Reddington annoys me. Also, I really really REALLY need that tattoo on Tom's neck to go away. I mean, IMMEDIATELY.
rheasilvia: (Default)
So basically, the only reason I'm still watching Blacklist is the blind hope that Tom will return soon, and he and Elizabeth can resume their fucked-up love affair. All that other stuff that keeps happening is starting to annoy me for taking up so much time. Come on, people. Where's Tom??

I am so predictable. ;-)

Massive spoilers for the season finale of How to Get Away With Murder.  )

Has anyone but me been watching this? You should check it out, if you haven't already! This is a brilliant show. I loved the characterizations shift throughout the seasons, the utterly believable way the ducklings fell further and further into the dark spiral that started with the initial crime, all certainties, morals and inhibitions peeling away one by one. And I loved seeing how this revealed more of the essential people beneath all the trappings of upbringing and society.

It suceeded better with some characters than others, of course. It surprised me that next to Connor, my favorites ended up being Michaela and (of all people) Asher, as well as Bonnie.

I really hope this great show gets renewed! Any news on that yet?

Scandal S1

Started watching Scandal (which [personal profile] giandujakiss has mentioned favorably so often that I had to check it out *g*) and like it quite a bit. I do have some issues with S1 that I am going to mention, however, because it will make me feel better, and also because maybe someone will want to talk with me about them. :-)

Spoilers for all of S1 under the cut! )

Anyone else watching this? What do you guys think?

(I'm presently starting in on S2, so please don't spoil me!)

So in the first ep of Sean Bean's new "undercover FBI agent takes on different identities and struggles with his own" series, the following things happen.

Spoilers for the pilot of Legends  )

Have you watched it? What did you think?

Remember when Phantom Menace was the cool new boom fandom for slashers...?

Man, I feel old. ;-)

(This post brought to you by my eternal bewilderment at the paths fannish migration takes, and my own unfortunate tendency to not like the fandoms and pairings that really take off. With a few happy exceptions.)

Hieroglyph

Pharaonic supernatural crime drama Hieroglyph will not be airing after all.

You know... I would love a series set in Ancient Egypt, provided it made even the slightest of attempts at actually being set in Ancient Egypt. The absolute minimum effort would suffice, really.

So, let's have a look at Hieroglyph.  )

Yeah.

Don't know about you, but I'm relieved.

ETA: Forgot to mention... judging by the crown the pharao's sister is wearing, she is his Great Wife. This is entirely historically accurate, but I am pretty sure it's also utterly unintentional. *eg*

My dentist's assistant just asked me - out of the blue, on the phone when I was rescheduling an appointment - when France is playing tonight. She wants to watch the game and was evidently panicking that she might have gotten the times wrong.

Soccer is THE fandom around here, and I've been wondering whether I should make a series of pic posts on the soccer madness going on. Maybe this is a hint. :-)

SyFy ordered a pilot based on Frank Miller's comic Ronin, which is about a samurai from feudal Japan time-travelling to a dystopic near-future New York on a mission to slay the demon who killed his lord.

My first thought? "No way, an Asian main character? Surely they're going to whitewash the samurai somehow!" And you'll never guess: turns out the samurai inhabits someone else's body in NY, namely the body of Billy, "a medical experiment".

I'm going to go out on a limb here and bet the medical experiment in question will be entirely non-Asian - and, in fact, blindingly WASP. Anyone willing to take me up on that bet?

SyFy also ordered pilots for several other scifi shows that fill me with apprehension, including Pax Romana, in which WW3 soldiers travel back to Ancient Rome. That is a set-up just begging for enraging historical ignorance and modern-day chauvinism.

Also, there's an adaptation of Lev Grossman's The Magicians, which actually might be less aggravating in series form. It can hardly be more enraging than the novel.

In conclusion, I am easily enraged by fictional narratives. And I am not sorry.
rheasilvia: (Witchy sign)
Well, I watched it! I thought it had a lot of potential in the beginning, even though it was flawed from the start. At its best, though, it was fun and bright and crazy in an endearingly crackficcy way. Plus I loved many of the characters, and even some of the ones that didn't initially interest me grew on me.

Spoilers and critical commentary for the entire series under the cut! )

So, have you seen it? What did you think?

Vid recs

Festivids has revealed the vidders - and I will take the opportunity to rec my favorite vids. Not that I've seen them all...

Young and Beautiful (The Tudors) by [personal profile] obsessive24
Will Henry Tudor still love you when you are no longer young and beautiful? Absolutely beautiful vid, poignant and moving and spot-on. I also love the way the knife cuts both ways - the singer quite values her guy's pretty face and amazing body, after all, and the vid picks up on this theme, as well.

Freedom at 21 (The White Queen) by [personal profile] obsessive24
Lovely vid that does a great job of showing the brutality, ruthlessness and ambition of both the times and two of the queens at the center of the Lancaster - York wars.
(Too bad I can't watch the last two eps of this series, but, argh. I just can't.)

Fireproof (Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters) by [personal profile] mithborien
I don't know the movie, although I've heard it's crack of the crackiest order (as I had surmised from the title alone). The vid, however, is lovely, and works as a stand-alone for me.

Applause (Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23) by [personal profile] elipie
Again, this is a source I don't know - but regardless of that, I enjoyed the vid very much. It's sheer bubbly, sparkly fun.

And of course, the two Raumpatrouille / Space Patrol Orion vids:

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly And The Other Guys by [profile] valika56
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by [personal profile] thirdblindmouse
rheasilvia: (Default)
OMG! There are Raumpatrouille Orion / Space Patrol Orion vids over at [community profile] festivids! And they both feature the amazing Space Dance that is still the best thing to ever happen on any scifi show, ever!

I really must rewatch that show. :-)

Here are the vids:
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly And The Other Guys

So, I have recently begun watching Sons of Anarchy, and I love it. The characterization is excellent, I like the allusions to Shakespeare (though they do oversell them a bit), and I love that they don't seem to forget what they did a season or two earlier. A coherent, overarching plot concept is not something I take for granted anymore.

Perhaps I will have actually substantial things to say about the show at some point... but this is not that point. ;-) Now, I just have two random (and entirely unspoilery) remarks about the lead actor.

For one thing: OMG, the MC's prince, Jax Teller, is that incredibly annoying twink of a one-night-stand that just would. not. go. away. from Queer as Folk! I would never ever have spotted this on my own.

Astonishing pictorial proof! Without shirts. Some of the time. )

Someone grew up nice. And joined an outlaw motorcycle club. Bet that's a winner in the gay club scene. ;-)

And for another thing: Dear Charlie Hunnam, I say this with love, but you might want to consider that not every emotion is best conveyed by earnestly shaking your head. In some scenes I'm concerned you'll get dizzy, or come down with a neck cramp.

(I'm currently in the middle of S4, so please don't spoil me!)
